went out for a drink last night to an old dive bar that i hadn't been to in a while (the uptown; 17th and capp. sf) looks like the bar itself is taking a dive in that the beam above the window to the pool room is starting to sag. considering i'm a fan of all things makeshift, i was impressed at the egenuity they had to use eye hooks and motorcycle tie-downs as a sort of suspension system to level out the beam. genius.

it's safe to say that outside of basketball i'm not the biggest sports fan but i know just enough in all other sporting avenues that i can probably keep up with your average dad conversations. the only teams i follow across all sports are those from my hometown... my real hometown, not this city... so this is a big week for my family. first, hometown boy cal ripken jr makes the hall of fame, yeah, it may have brought a slight tear to my eye. also, he made it known that he would be willing, if the time comes, to purchase the baltimore orioles, talk about hometown pride...



secondly, this weekend brings the colts/ravens playoff game in baltimore, i think it's time for a little retribution for a certain team bailing on a certain city... i still have childhood memories of the mayflower trucks being shown on the news sneaking out of the city.

did i mention that the ncaa women's basketball team is undefeated? (how can a 17-0 team be ranked under a 14-1 team, tell me) and the men's is at a very respectable 14-2. maybe it is something in the water... but we rule.

after a long night of drinking and nasty hangover, these three tag teamed with the amazing pancakes from canteen to help out. thanks guys.

while at home for the holidays i had the chance to once again visit café st. ex, i was really impressed with the atmosphere, food and the people that were working there. it was definitely a mellow and comfortable place to sit down and relax from the frantic holiday pace. highly recommend it if you're in the dc area, would also recommend checking out their really nice merch, i bought a t-shirt myself.

the last time i listened to a melvins record was when houdini came out, but under a recommendation from a friend i picked up a copy of their new record, (a) senile animal. i'd say it's one of my new favorite records of the year and it's been on repeat while i've been sitting in traffic and in airports this holiday season.

i would say that my stepfather gave me quite possibly the best present ever for christmas... all of my moms photo albums.there are six albums all together and i'm still in the process of sorting through them all and scanning everything but once i'm finished i'll put them all up on flickr. this makes me pretty damn happy.

it's been over two years since i've been home for the holidays or any other reason and as of thursday i'll be back in good ol' merryland. there is something about going back to a place where you have so many rich memories that is comforting even if you only see it once a year.

i remember every place and every memory so vividly that at times i think it's more vivid than it was when it actually happened. i remember every late night skate spot, the place where my old girlfriend and i used to go park the car to make out, i remember the smell of the bread bakery downtown, everything... it's all crystal clear...

i have the same memories about places here but for some reason they're not as strong as the one's from home. it's most certainly because the memories of home have had both time and distance to ferment a little bit and now are way more concentrated.

there are only three days before i leave and i'm already planning out my route around my old stomping grounds to carefully document with my camera all of these places from another time.
